Why Men Need More Than Just Traditional Healthcare: A Guide to Holistic Wellness

Have you seen photographs of people on the beach back in the 1970s? Everyone looks extremely healthy and fit, minus the cigarettes in hand. Fast forward to the beach now and you won’t see the same thing. Now of course there are some extremely fit looking people that are probably walking the beach, but among the few are some unhealthy looking individuals…belly fat, man boobs, balding, or they look like I use to: skinny fat. I use to be extremely skinny, but had no muscle to show for it. But what men look like on the outside doesn’t always tell the story of what’s happening internally.

We are sicker than ever before. And what is extremely wild is that we have the most advanced technology and education, on top of the therapeutics that should be making us healthy. That’s not even close to the case. The medications that people are taking daily are often complemented by another medication to counteract the side effects of the first pill. The United States spends the most money out of any country on healthcare, yet we are one of the lowest performing countries when it comes to health metrics. These statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health, Center for Disease and Control, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Cancer Research UK, and British Nutrition Foundation will hopefully paint a better picture for why men need help more than ever.

  • Nearly 6 million men are affected by depression each year in the U.S.

    • about 36% of men with mental health conditions receive treatment, compared to 49% of women.

  • In 2022, men in the U.S. died by suicide nearly four times more than women.

    • white males accounted for about 68% of suicide deaths.

  • Men have a lower life expectancy than women by about five years.

    • largely due to preventable health issues like heart disease, liver disease, and accidents.

  • Men are more prone to risky behaviors like alcohol and substance abuse.

    • studies show that men are nearly twice as likely as women to binge drink.

  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death among men.

    • responsible for roughly 1 in 4 male deaths.

  • About 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.

  • Over 70% of American men are overweight or obese.

  • 15% of men reporting they have no close friends.

  • Nearly half of men aged 25-54 report insufficient sleep.

So do we need more medication? I say no! Sure, there are some cases where men need prescription medication to manage their condition(s). But this should only be a temporary solution.

Men need to step it up with their health and take it seriously.

  • 1 Corinthians 6:19–20: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.”

Men need find or redefine their purpose.

  • Ephesians 2:10, which states: "For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

Men need to be around to provide for their family.

  • 1 Timothy 5:8: "But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever."
